Task Seven- Music Video Analysis- Task Two

Mind Map created by Tom Cornock with GoConqr

This task has shown me how music videos are built with a narrative structure and elements of performance. There seem to be 3 main ways of structuring a video. The first being a fully performance based video- such as the Fatboy Slim video- these can be rather humorous and are well choreographed. This works particularly well for dance or pop music which is upbeat and vibrant. Another is a fully narrative video. These are often done by huge artists or indie bands who do not feel the need to show their own faces in the video, making the music video a more important form of consumption. Lastly, there are often a balance of both, with lip syncing performance splitting the narrative. I like this style as it seems more diverse and can by linked together if produced well. It is clear from the task that Todorov and Propp's theories are prominent in these videos, with each containing many sections which support them. For example, I found that character types were used in almost all, mostly to show the Artist as the 'Hero'. When I make my video, I will be considerate of what my video should include structurally and finding a balance between the performance and narrative.
